History Ignited is a family history podcast created by parents and kids. Each short episode explores a person, place, event, or idea connected to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Our goal is to make history interesting, understandable, and memorable for kids and families.

History Ignited is designed primarily for children ages 6 to 11, but parents, teachers, and older listeners enjoy it too. Episodes are short enough for a car ride, breakfast, a classroom transition, or bedtime listening.

History Ignited is hosted by our family: Andrew, our resident historian Caroline, our resident comedian Amy, who researches and writes the episodes Dave, who helps fact-check and explain the science and context

Not at all. Each episode stands on its own. We explain the topic, why it mattered, and why it may have been included in the song. Knowing the song makes the journey more fun, but it is not required. (But we bet you'll love it if you do!)

History Ignited began with a question from Andrew, who was nine at the time. He loved history and wanted to know what the references in Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” meant. One of the first was “Bridge on the River Kwai.” Amy did not know the answer, so the family looked it up together. That conversation sparked an idea: create one short, kid-friendly episode for each reference in the song. The song gave the family a structure for exploring modern history, but the podcast quickly became about more than explaining lyrics. It became a way for Andrew, Caroline, Amy, and Dave to learn.

Yes. History Ignited was created specifically for families. Some historical topics involve war, discrimination, political conflict, or other difficult events. We discuss those subjects honestly while using age-appropriate language and avoiding unnecessary graphic detail. Parents may wish to preview episodes involving especially serious topics.

When History Ignited won the 2025 Webby People’s Voice Award for Best Kids & Family Podcast, the kids needed a five-word acceptance speech. They chose: Teach Kids History. Prevent Repeats. Those five words became the show’s guiding message. We believe learning history helps kids recognize patterns, ask better questions, and make more informed choices.
